Judging Criteria
​

1. Originality and Creativity, unusual and exceptional interpretation
     a. Proportions, anatomy, balance & perspective
     b. Use of light and shadows
     c. Use of color
2. Execution and Difficulty
     a. Carving technique
     b. Difficulty of carving
3. Technique and Finish
     a. Application of finish
     b. Consistent sanding
     c. Does the finish enhance the grain?
     d. Color in relation to overall work.
4. Overall Presentation
     a. Decorative value
     b. Worthiness of the exhibit
     c. Continuity
     d. Harmonious & Complimentary base design
Skill Levels
NOVICE
Any carver who has not won at least five 1st place awards at any woodcarving competition.
INTERMEDIATE
Any carver who has not won at least five 1st place awards at the intermediate level or a best of show award at any woodcarving competition. 
ADVANCED*
Any advanced, professional, or other expert carver with a record of successful competition; and anyone of any skill level who wishes to compete at the highest level. Includes carvers who provide professional instruction on wood carving.

* A competitor may submit a request to change their competition level. The request will be presented by a jury of appointed judges/officials, who will approve or deny your request.
